Luis Rubiales‘ case is another addition to the growing list of sexual assault cases that we are seeing in the footballing world these days. The president of the Spanish Federation of Football kissed Spain’s women’s team captain, Jenni Hermoso. The Spanish man first said that the kiss was mutual and both parties consented to it but he has now accepted his mistake.
Luis Rubiales has resigned from his position and he is ordered to pay a fine for the actions he committed. The amount is a huge one and the former president is now forced to sell his property in order to meet the requirements.
Former Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales sold his £1.2m Madrid property to fund divorce and sexual harassment legal bills
In the beginning, Luis Rubiales tried to claim that he was innocent and refused to resign. That did not long last and he has now been removed from his position. In an interview, Rubiales admitted that the kiss was a ‘mistake’ but ‘there was no harm, no sexual content, no aggression.’
He is also involved in a legal battle with his wife and has to pay alimony to her as well. The former AFE president is now forced to sell his luxury property in Madrid worth £1.2 m. The house has a swimming pool, an underfloor heating and two bedrooms. Rubiales has thrown himself in a deep pit and it will be hard for him to get out of there anytime soon.
Though he has now been removed from his position many players still think that this change is not enough for women to feel safe. ‘The changes made are not enough for the players to feel safe, where women are respected, where there is support for women’s football and where we can maximise our potential,’ the players said in a statement.
Luis Rubiales needs to pay alimony to his ex-wife and kids
Luis Rubiales and his wife, Manuela Delicado Vega decided to part ways in 2011. They have three daughters and Luis was ordered to pay an alimony of 400€ a month for each of them. His wife requested the court for the revision of his child support payment after his salary increased from 97,000€ in 2011 to 955,000€ in 2020.
He now has to double the amount and will be paying 800€ per month for each of his daughters. Reports claim that it was because of his daughters that Luis Rubiales accepted his mistake and resigned from the presidential position. According to the Daily Mail, they told him to ‘focus on his dignity.’
We have been seeing an increase in these types of cases for quite a while now and FIFA really needs to take some strict action against its players and staff to make sure this never happens again.
