It hurts to see our favorite wrestlers depart, but they must go on. Sting, a former WWE superstar best remembered for his tenure with Impact Wrestling, is reportedly considering a career change. Sting is contemplating retirement from professional wrestling after a prolonged career.
Despite being dismissed from WWE in 2020, Steve Borden aka Sting is still actively competing. His intended retirement year is 2024, and he had dropped a clue about it on a recent episode of Dynamite. There have been rumors that Sting might announce his retirement on this week’s AEW Dynamite, and he did just that. It seems an emotional goodbye to The Hall of Famer is in the cards.
Former WWE star Sting announces his retirement date and match
Sting has not competed in a one-on-one bout since signing with AEW. Most of his matches have been in a tag team with Darby Allin. With Allin out of commission, The Vigilante may have to take on some of AEW’s rising heels all by himself. Sting, at 64, may have decided to shift his emphasis from competition to management. Tony Khan has remarked in the past that Sting will ultimately decide when to leave the band.
The Hall of Famer could be able to maintain his connection to wrestling by becoming an on-screen authority figure. His retirement could be facilitated by certain choices. He made an appearance on Dynamite to talk about his newfound success in AEW and his plans for the future. During his retrospective, the icon spoke about his lengthy career and the Hall of Famers he’s learned from. He reflected on the unwavering support of his audience and debated whether or not to call it quits.
Sting has said that his last encounter with AEW will take place at Revolution 2024. In his final year with AEW, it will be interesting to watch what kind of matches he is booked for.
Why did Sting leave WWE to join AEW?
Sting’s contract with WWE expired back in May, and he immediately signed a multi-year contract with AEW. His first thoughts on WWE’s handling of WCW stars were not positive. He explained how WWE stars look down on WCW wrestlers by relating an instance in which The Rock insulted Booker T in the ring.
In addition, Sting always wanted a big bout with The Undertaker in WWE. When things weren’t going well for him with the brand, he decided to leave. Sting vs. Undertaker was advertised but never happened, and now The Undertaker has said that his encounter with AJ Styles at the Boneyard will be his last match ever.
According to Fightful, he said, “The only thing I thought I might do is have a cinematic match against Undertaker when I was with WWE. We weren’t able to come to an agreement.”
