Tom Brady may have bidden farewell to the NFL last year, but the debate surrounding whether he was the best quarterback or not is not over yet. Brady has won seven Super Bowl titles along with many other accolades which makes him the GOAT in the NFL. He spent 23 years in the league and broke several records cementing his name in the NFL.
However, there are a few people who still don’t consider Tom Brady the best quarterback of all. Recently, Joe Montana expressed a similar stance on the best quarterback debate.
Joe Montana snubs Tom Brady while declaring Dan Marino as best QB
Joe Montana, a four-time Super Bowl champion and former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers appeared in an interview and declared that Dan Marino is the best quarterback.
Dan Marino was the quarterback of the Miami Dolphins and Montana thinks that he is the most underrated quarterback.
“Marino is one of the most overlooked heroes in the game. People don’t talk enough about him and don’t understand what numbers he put up. He had perfect upper body control and the strength to throw the ball quickly and accurately,” Joe said.
The four-time Super Bowl believes that if Marino played in today’s pass-oriented NFL, he would hold numerous records instead of Tom Brady.
He further added that Marino had to deal with late hits from defenders throughout their careers. But with the new NFL rules, things have become easier for quarterbacks now.
“Put Marino with his ability to get rid of the ball quickly in today’s game, with this freedom and protection that quarterbacks have, and with the size that receivers have today, which are really big and my God!”
But the fact is that Brady has seven Super Bowl titles under his belt on the other hand Marino never won a Super Bowl Championship. He did appear in one but lost.
Marino’s achievements include leading the NFL in passing yards five times and in touchdown passes three times. He made a single-season touchdown record, of 48, but after two years Peyton Manning broke it. But Brady still holds many records which no one has ever broken.
Montana praises Mahomes more than Brady
After discussing Dan Marino, Montana praised Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. Montana highlighted Mahomes’ unique ability to handle various situations, making him stand out among quarterbacks.
“The things he does and the situations he can handle are very different from any other quarterback.”
Currently, Patrick Mahomes is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Last season he led his team to the Super Bowl Championship and became the Super Bowl MVP. But still, neither Marino nor Mahomes has reached the level of success that Tom Brady has.
Joe Montana still didn’t talk about the seven-time Super Bowl champion and rather called Marino the best quarterback and praised Mahomes more than Tom Brady. The debates like these will be continued but Brady is now focusing on off-field ventures which include becoming the owner of the Raiders and Birmingham City.
