Giannis Antetokounmpo contract: Why Bucks PF not willing to sign an extension unless the franchise does this one thing?

In just three years, Giannis Antetokounmpo has risen to massive NBA stardom. The Power Forward for the Milwaukee Bucks has been their top man for some time now. But all this could change as Giannis is running out of the time left on his contract and it looks very likely now that he won’t sign with the Milwaukee Bucks again.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013. It’s these ten years since signing Giannis has achieved a good amount of silverware and awards. He has been a constant NBA All-Star since 2017 and won the championship with Bucks in 2021. He has also secured the NBA MVP award twice in his career along with many other accolades.

Giannis Antetokounmpo won’t sign deal without Bucks’ title commitment

Giannis had a lot to say when asked about his contract renewal with the Milwaukee Bucks. He focused on the scenario that it would be unlikely for him to renew his contract if he felt the rest of the people were not on the same page as him. After winning the Championship in 2021, the Bucks have been struggling. They got knocked out in the playoffs last season only securing one win against the Miami Heat.

In a tweet by NBA Central, it can be seen what he thinks about the team, the championship, and himself. The 28-year-old indicates with his statement that if he did not feel the same drive, same hunger to win the championship again from the team, he wouldn’t renew his contract. He emphasizes that he sacrifices time with his family for the team and if he doesn’t feel the same from others, he won’t be able to perform at his best.

Exploring Giannis Antetokounmpo’s current contract with the Bucks

Giannis’ current contract with the Bucks is a 5-year deal worth around $228 million which he signed in 2019. His current contract covers the 2024-25 season and has a player option for the 2025-26 season.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s base salary in the 2023-24 season is around $45 million and should rise to around $49 million in the 2024-25 season. Giannis is eligible to extend his contract by signing a contract extension starting from September 22, 2023. He can easily get a $250 million contract over 5 years if he decides to extend his contract but that looks highly unlikely as of now.
