Ryan Garcia has been provoking Gervonta Davis for several years, but Davis has consistently downplayed him. Often labeling him as a weak contender and a child, no matter how many profanity-laced rants Garcia would unleash.
After scoring a knockout victory against Hector Luis Garcia in January. The WBA (Regular) lightweight champion, ‘Tank’, has not been super active. The win marked another successful title defense and finish for him, and brought him closer to a potential fight with ‘KingRy’.
However, in a turn of events, Davis now sees Garcia as a legitimate challenger, despite the two lightweight stars having a history of going back and forth for years. Their announcement of a fight last year took many by surprise. With Ryan establishing himself as one of boxing’s top stars and powerful punchers, Davis is eager to face him in the ring.
The two are scheduled to meet in the main event on April 22nd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Gervonta is considered the favorite to win, he acknowledges Garcia’s immense talent and isn’t underestimating him.
Gervonta Davis recognizes Garcia as a difficult opponent
Ryan, who is 24 years old, has solidified himself as a credible opponent after several significant victories. In his latest triumph, the former WBC interim champion defeated Javier Fortuna by knocking him down and stopping him in the sixth round in July 2022. Despite Fortuna’s reputation for toughness.
Davis has acknowledged Garcia’s skills as a boxer, despite previously dismissing him as a worthy opponent. Gervonta, who has faced tough opponents like Leo Santa Cruz, acknowledges that Garcia’s height, reach, and punching power makes him a formidable challenge. Davis believes that Garcia will be the toughest opponent he has ever faced.
“Yea for sure,” said Davis during a recent interview when asked if Garcia will be his most difficult challenge yet. “He’s the toughest I would say.”
