How much did Real Madrid spend to renovate Santiago Bernabeu? Examining the fruition of Los Blancos’ ambitious 12-year project

Every giant club in the world has a stadium that the players can call their home, the Spanish club Real Madrid is no exception. The club’s home stadium is called Santiago Bernabeu and it is one of the oldest stadiums which was built in 1947. It is no doubt that Madrid is one of the best clubs in the world having won the most number of Champions League trophies.

It is only understandable that a club with such a legacy must have a stadium like no other. Real Madrid has just finished renovating their new stadium and the result will surely shock you. The new designs and moderation look futuristic and the overall look of the club is something we have never seen before.

Real Madrid hosted Getafe in new look Santiago Bernabeu

After 90 days Real Madrid had their first match in Santiago Bernabeu. The club was not hosting any games as they wanted to play their first home game in a fully renovated stadium. The stadium is now completed and the Los Blancos hosted a match against Getafe in their new home.

The team successfully won their first home match defeating Getafe with a score of 2-1 with Madrid’s new signing Jude Bellingham making it to the scoreboard with a late goal in the 95th minute. This was the first time fanse got to watch a La Liga game in the stadium this season. The stadium has the capacity to hold 85,000 viewers. 

Los Blancos planned the renovation in 2011

The stadium is an architectural wonder it has steel strips weighing over 7,000 tons wrapped around it to give it a classy look. These steel strips can also be lit up in the night to project images. This new technology gives the stadium a lively feel. The pitch can also be covered using steel fences installed at the top of the stadium so the action can go on during rain. Overall the new stadium was worth the wait and its futuristic look is something that sets Santiago Bernabeu and Madrid apart from other clubs.

Real Madrid

The idea for the project first originated in 2011 and in 2019 Madrid’s staff started to make it a reality. Executing a project this big did not come cheap. Reports claim that the whole renovation has cost Real Madrid over ā‚¬1billion. JP Morgan and Bank of America funded the project at a rate of 1.53%. Real Madrid released drone footage of the stadium on their Twitter handle to give the fans a full look at it.
