Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the most beloved names in the UFC. He initially announced retirement from UFC after his fights against Justin Gaethje and after Islam Makhachev won the title, decided to call it quits completely. Now Makhachev’s first title defense performance may make him rethink his choices.
The current lightweight champion describes the instant reaction of ‘the Eagle’ post-fight, “He told me he was so nervous. And he said, ‘Why are you doing this, this, this this?’ If you come too and if you were my corner, I can do this. But you didn’t come.”

It is clear that the former dominant fighter’s combat IQs are still as sharp as ever even though he decided to step away from the game. In fact, he worked almost as a coach for many of his fighters who have also done well inside the Octagon. What happened during his conversations with the current 155 lb champ? Let’s find out with the released clips:
Nurmagomedov stated, “Well, you’re the pound-for-pound king,” To which the current champ replied, “If only you were here — it would be much easier for me. It’s not like I fought a random guy, he’s the best fighter in the world. I’ll see you soon.” Khabib ended by saying, “I aged 50 years because of you.”
But does Islam Makhachev feel something has been taken away from him? Well, he had this to say after his successful title defense, “This is my dream. Doesn’t matter how I won. I’m very happy.”
Will Khabib Nurmagomedov return after seeing this fight?
Makhachev initially talked about understanding Khabib’s decision to retire. Now both he and his best friend probably feel like the communication they developed after being together for so many years probably can’t be broken so easily. At the same time, we must remember Nurmagomedov usually keeps his word when he promises something.
We should find out more when Makhachev steps back inside the Octagon against the next contender whoever he may be.
