Pep Guardiola is highly regarded as one of the best managers ever, given all the success he has achieved in his managing career. After he took over Manchester City at the start of the 2016/17 season, he transformed the Citizens into one of the most dominant soccer teams in the world. Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is not shy about showing his admiration for his former coach.
Kompany took over the EFL Championship side Burnley at the beginning of the 2022/2023 season following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. Since then, he has seen substantial success, as Burnley is sitting at the top of the Championship table. They are 10 points clear of second place Sheffield United.
His former coach, Pep Guardiola, recognizes Kompany’s success as a manager. The former FC Barcelona player and coach thinks that Vincent has every quality to take over Manchester City as a manager. “It’s written in the stars,” he said.
Despite all the praise from his former coach, the former Belgian international believes that City has the best manager in the world. Kompany hopes that he will remain there for another 10 years.
“They have the best manager in the world today, and I hope he stays for another 10 years. If not, they should have the best manager in the world after Pep. From my side, I am way down the rankings, so there isn’t even a second in my thoughts when I am busy with that,” he said.
He then stated that his current focus is completely on Burnley and that he needs to become the best manager in the world before he can think of taking over Manchester City.
How successful was Vincent Kompany on Guardiola’s Manchester City side?
Before Vincent Kompany announced his retirement at the end of the 2019/20 season, he had won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, and an FA Cup under Pep Guardiola. He scored a crucial 30-yard stunner against Leicester City on the 37th matchday of the 2018/19 season, as his goal secured the title for Manchester City.
Vincent will be returning to the Etihad Stadium as a manager in City’s FA Cup quarter-final clash against Burnley on March 18. We cannot wait to see the reunion (and the clash as managers) of the former Premier League-winning coach-and-captain duo!
