The Swiss, Stan Wawrinka is the 38-year-old tennis pro who is a former world number 3, with 3 grad slam titles and 16 ATP titles in total in his bag. He is known to be Tennis’s latecomer for finding success much later in his career than the usual athlete. Lately, Stan and Novak Djokovic seem to have an amicable rivalry in the ATP tours and have went up against each other 26 times before.
The Swiss Stanimal defeated the Argentine tennis player, Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the second round of the Wimbledon 2023 and will be going up against former world number 1, Novak Djokovic. When the Swiss player was asked about his upcoming match, it was clear that Nole is not only the season’s crown favorite but also the players’ worst fear.
Stan Wawrinka on facing Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon 2023
Having went up against each other 26 times already, it looks like Nole has dominated the Swiss with a massive difference of 20- 6 wins. However, this duo has not competed in the grass court and this might be another entertaining match this season. So, Wawrinka knows who he is going against and even though it sounded like he was being funny when he said, “I will enjoy, if I don’t get killed,” there might have been some true feelings attached to it.

The Swiss pro adds, “Yes, we have never played on grass, but quite happy to have the chance to play against him on this surface, before I finish playing. It is going to be a big challenge, hopefully I play at a higher level and be competitive like always I have done against him, push him to the maximum and we will see what happens.”
When we keep in mind that not long ago did Stan Wawrinka defeated the tennis legend, Novak Djokovic, this might be a more difficult match for Djokovic than it seems. Although Stan keeps reiterating that he “doesn’t stand a chance,” his history makes fans question how true this really is.
Wawrinka vs Djokovic head-to-head
Novak is aiming for his record breaking 24th Grand Slam and 8th Wimbledon title this season and there are already so many other players that he will need to look out for such as Andy Murray and Carlos Alcaraz. Adding to the list is his third round match against the former world number 3, Stan Wawrinka.
“Well, he took away two Grand Slams from me. That’s the role he played [in my career], beating me in two Grand Slam finals,” he said smiling, when he was asked about Stan Wawrinka. Most notably, their match in 2006 Davis cup, US Open match in 2013 and their three matches in the Australian Open from 2013 to 2015, each, went on to be five-set thrillers.
The Swiss has even defeated Nole at the French Open 2015 and US Open 2016. Both players have grown a lot since then and this third round match at SW19 is definitely going to entertain tennis fans with an elite level of tennis brilliance. Who do think will win this match?
