Inter Miami’s hopes dashed despite thumping win as ex-Lionel Messi teammate Luis Suarez’s Gremio contract held him back

Inter Miami has made some peculiar signings this transfer window. The club has achieved its long-term goal of having Lionel Messi play soccer in the Magic City. The David Beckham co-owned club will benefit both on and off the pitch owing to their investments in legendary players. Up until now, the club has completed the signings of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba

To further add to their already improved squad the club is looking at some other players, one of which is Messi’s ex-teammate and best friend, Luis Suarez. The striker wishes to play the last few years of his career with his best friend on the USA’s east coast. However, there exist certain complications in completing Suarez’s switch to the club. Although the Messi-led squad will turn the tides on the field, it may still be difficult to sign El Pistolero.

Messi’s former teammate Luis Suarez stays put at Gremio

Luis Suarez

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were teammates and the best of friends during their time together at FC Barcelona in Spain. The pair along with Brazilian mercurial winger Neymar Jr. were unstoppable, combining with each other to produce audacious as well as well-worked goals for the Culers. The pair was the epicentre of Barca’s attacking threat winning 4 League Titles, 4 Copa Del Rey Titles, and winning the UEFA Champions League in 2015. Luis Suarez’s 47 assists for Messi are the most by any other player, with El Puga returning the favour 52 times.

Inter Miami definitely would’ve benefitted from the partnership between the two, however, certain complications with Suarez’s current club Gremio are a big hurdle forcing the club to retreat from the deal. After his departure from Atletico Madrid, Suarez shifted to Brazilian club Gremio, where he is contracted till 2024. Reportedly the striker is willing to return $10 million of his total earnings to the club, but Gremio’s management is stuck on keeping the player at least until December

Inter Miami successfully secured an extra international roster slot to facilitate Suarez’s transfer. However, due to Gremio’s reluctance to let the Uruguayan leave, the Miami-based club is left with no option but to end their pursuit of the ex-Liverpool forward. With the transfer window deadline nearing, it is less likely that the situation will change before August 2.

Lionel Messi’s brace sets up thumping win vs Atlanta

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are continuing their good run of form in their matches. The 7-time Ballon D’or winner was at the center of Miami’s goal threat in their league cup tie against fellow MLS club Atalanta United FC. The little magician scored two goals within the first 30 minutes and assisted another, taking his tally to 3 goals and 1 assist in just two games for the club.

Lionel Messi

With Lionel Messi hitting the ground running, Inter Miami fans will be hoping for an upturn in the form of the club. The club will only continue to grow after Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also start working with the squad. With Suarez’s addition, Miami’s fear would’ve grown even further. Regardless, Inter Miami and Leo Messi will be a force to reckon with for the duration of his stay in Florida.
