Jared Cannonier wants rematch with UFC champ Israel Adesanya in Sydney, vows to finish Marvin Vettori

With UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya aiming to participate in UFC 293, Jared Cannonier intends to position himself in an advantageous position for a rematch.

Cannonier (16-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) will face former middleweight title contender Marvin Vettori (19-6-1 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC) in the headline bout of UFC on ESPN 47 on June 17 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Does Jared Cannonier deserve a title shot?

Following his defeat to Adesanya (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC), Cannonier made a comeback with a controversial victory against Sean Strickland. His goal now seems to be to defeat Vettori and establish himself as the top contender for ‘The Last Stylebender’ on the September 10 card in Sydney.

On September 9, the UFC is expected to stage a pay-per-view event back in Sydney, Australia.

Israel desires to headline the event, but it is uncertain if there will be an available top title challenger. The plan is to have the winner of the Robert Whittaker vs. Dricus Du Plessis fight make a quick return, assuming they do not sustain injuries.

Who are the other UFC fighters in line for a title shot?

If Whittaker/Du Plessis is not ready, the UFC may require Jared Cannonier or Marvin Vettori to step in.

Adesanya vs Cannonier

“I’m getting ready,” Cannonier told Middle Easy. “I will definitely be ready to fight in Sydney. My passport is up to date, my bags will be packed, and the way I plan on performing. I’m definitely gonna be ready to step in and make it happen. But who knows?”

“There’s talks of him going up to light heavyweight and doing the champ-champ thing again. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. Either he goes up to light heavyweight and fights Jamahal (Hill) out there. Or they have no choice but to put me in there because I’m definitely calling for it after I put Marvin’s lights out,” he further added.

Before worrying about what’s to come, Cannonier first needs to first focus on UFC Vegas 75.

It will be interesting to witness if ‘Killa Gorilla’ can overcome Vettori and position himself ideally to secure another opportunity at the middleweight championship. Achieving a stoppage against Vettori will likely be no simple feat. Considering the Italian fighter has never been halted in his UFC career so far.

Nevertheless, “The Killa Gorilla” asserts that he will leave Vettori no breathing space during their encounter. Let’s see how that fight goes!
