One of the most decorated managers in modern-day football, Jose Mourinho, renowned as ‘the special one,’ has managed prominent clubs like Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid. He is now in the Italian capital, Rome, managing AS Roma.
The Portuguese boss might follow the same path as other stars like Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar Jr., heading to Saudi Arabia, as interest grows for his signature, given that his time with Roma is ending soon.
Mourinho eyes historic deal as Saudi Pro League
The two-time Champions League-winning manager, Jose Mourinho, guided AS Roma to their first-ever UEFA Conference League triumph in the 2021 season. It was their sole trophy in 60 years. In the following season, he led them to the UEFA Europa League final, where they lost to Sevilla on penalties.
This season, Mourinho’s side AS Roma is having a shaky start in the Italian league, standing at 10th place in the Serie A table with only 3 wins and as many losses, accumulating only 11 points in 8 matches. It seems Jose and Roma could possibly part ways.
According to reports, the Portuguese boss will leave the Italian capital following the completion of his contract at the end of the season. There are no ongoing contract extension negotiations between the two parties; thus, it’s likely he might bid farewell to the ‘Wolves’.
Recently, Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal attempted to lure Jose Mourinho by offering him the managerial role in Riyadh. However, the 60-year-old preferred to remain focused on Roma instead. Nevertheless, his future seems to be set for an Arabian endeavor, where he is poised to become the highest-paid manager.
Al-Hilal is still interested in bringing him to the Saudi Pro League in 2024. Moreover, another Saudi club is reportedly ready to offer Jose Mourinho a £104 million two-year contract. AS Roma is already exploring his replacements and is unlikely to offer any further extensions beyond this season.
When did Mourinho move to Roma?
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss returned to Italy after a decade. His last managerial stint in Italy was with the Italian giants Inter Milan, where he secured a treble in the 2009-10 season. He then moved to join Real Madrid and later took the Chelsea job in 2013, achieving numerous titles during his tenure.
Jose Mourinho moved to AS Roma in 2021 from the Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. He signed a three-season contract until 2024 and led them to two consecutive European finals. Now, he is on the verge of moving to the Saudi Pro League.
