After ending the 2023 season with the worst season record, the New England Patriots are undergoing a major transformation, leaving the QB Mac Jones’s future uncertain. The team has changed their head coach in a quarter century and is now expected to work at the quarterback position as well.
Amid these changes, the team’s WR, JuJu Smith-Schuster has voiced his opinion about the Patriots continuing with Mac Jones.
JuJu Smith-Schuster supports Mac Jones as Patriots number one QB
Reportedly, the Patriots are not expected to continue with Mac Jones as a starting quarterback for the upcoming season. However, JuJu Smith-Schuster, the biggest supporter of Jones has a different opinion.
He emphasized that Mac Jones should remain the starting QB of the team, saying, “Honestly, man my boy Mac, that’s my guy. I know at the end of the day, whatever the coaches decide to do. But I think Mac’s still got it.”
During the 2023 season, Mac Jones’ performance wasn’t satisfactory for anyone to vote for him to get the starting position. However, JuJu Smith-Schuster made it clear that he is hoping Mac Jones and his backup, Bailey Zappe, get another chance for the 2024 season.
“I’m riding with Mac. I’m riding with my boy Zappe. Those are my boys. I came in throwing with those dudes.”
The wide receiver also emphasized that the final decision will be of the team, indicating that the Patriots might not be ready to give Jones another chance. “But, whatever happens, happens,” he added.
If the team makes a different decision, no one can blame them, considering Jones was only 2-9 in the 11 games he started last season. He threw for just 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His quarterback rating dipped to 77.0 as well. The quarterback’s poor performance last season will significantly impact the team’s decision about his future.
Mac Jones Patriots future hangs in balance
Over the past two seasons, Mac Jones has experienced a decline in performance. Although he can’t be entirely blamed for the team’s worst performance, his own performance wasn’t satisfactory, declining to the point where he was benched multiple times during the 2023 season, ultimately losing his starting role.
The NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Patriots are exploring the possibility of trading Jones during the offseason. With the Patriots holding the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, there is anticipation that they will prioritize selecting a quarterback and rebuilding the team under new leadership.
So far, Mac Jones’s future with the New England Patriots is uncertain. He will likely be traded during the offseason, marking the end of a disappointing tenure in New England.
