Justin Fields facing grim reality of NFL free agency with “backup” calls

QB Justin Fields is in the final year of his contract with the Chicago Bears. For the past few weeks, his free agency has been the major topic of discussion in the NFL world.

It was expected that the Bears would not re-sign him and multiple teams including the Steelers were showing interest in signing the QB. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently revealed that the decision has become difficult for Fields as his landing options are drying up.

Insider reveals actual state of Justin Fields free agency

Adam Schefter talked about Justin Fields and his uncertain future with the Chicago Bears on “First Take” on Tuesday. He shared that the teams which were previously expected to sign him as a starting QB are no longer interested and the rest are looking at him as a backup option.

“The teams that are looking at him would be looking at him as a backup,” Schefter said.

Initially, it was expected that the Atlanta Falcons would sign Justin Fields. However, they ended up signing Kirk Cousins on a massive contract. Schefter then also emphasized that the Steelers and Raiders were the names that were being associated with Justin Fields, but both teams decided to move on with other players.

Adam Schefter explained that for now there is no starting job left for the QB. “It doesn’t look like there is a starting job out there at this particular moment.”

The last option could have been that the Bears re-sign him along with signing Caleb Williams. However, Schefter shared that the team is not considering that option at all.

“Bears have talked about the idea, as unlikely as it seems, of carrying both quarterbacks.”

Initially, it appeared that Justin Fields had a lot of options to move on with after leaving the Bears, but gradually all those options have been removed. For now, the future of one of the highly talented quarterbacks remains uncertain for the upcoming season.

Justin Fields landing spots explored

As the future of Justin Fields remains uncertain, ESPN analysts Dan Orlovsky and Louis Reddick recently discussed the possible landing spots for the QB. Dan Orlovsky believes that the Raiders could be a good option even after they signed Gardner Minshew. However, he suggested that the Minnesota Vikings would not consider signing Fields as he believes a trade within the division is unlikely to happen.

According to Orlovsky, if both these options become void then Justin Fields will likely choose to become a backup quarterback for a Franchise like the Browns, Giants, or the Jets.

“Maybe it is the Mac Jones route, where Cleveland Browns get reinforcements behind Deshaun Watson or maybe like the New York Giants or Jets behind their starting quarterback for very cheap value and don’t pick up the fifth-year option just yet,” Dan stated.

However, Louis Riddick suggested completely different options. He believes that after so much trade drama, Justin Fields might consider New England or Minnesota. He also added that as the Raiders have signed Gardner Minshew, the team is no longer a potential landing spot for Justin Fields. While Dan Orlovsky and Louis Reddick suggested new landing spots for the QB, there is still this recurring belief that he will end up re-signing with the Chicago Bears.

What do you think will be the final landing spot for Justin Fields? Let us know in the comments.
