Premier League clubs have been known to spend a lot of money on players. In fact, the English League has been the league with the most money spent on transfers for the last three seasons and one of the regular clubs in this category nowadays is Manchester City.
Under the management of Spanish tactician Pep Guardiola, the city group has established a really good team and has been dominating both English and world football. The defending Champions League winners have been involved in many big-money buys. One of those transfers was of England international Kalvin Phillips, which didn’t work out that well and recently even the manager has stated regret for doing so.
Conflicting reports emerge regarding Kalvin Phillips transfer
Earlier this morning, Fabrizio Romano tweeted that Leeds Academy graduate Kalvin Phillips has successfully signed for West Ham United and is set to be announced to the world on Friday morning. The €28.00 million-rated midfielder has been on the transfer list of the club for a fairly long time and it seems like the saga is going to end for real this time as another report backed the claims of the journalist.
These reports will be a fresh breathe of air for the former Leeds player as he has struggled to find a place in the starting line-up for the defending Premier League champions since his transfer 18 months ago.
Kalvin Phillips deemed ‘not good enough’ for Man City
Kalvin Mark Phillips signed for the Pep Guardiola side for €49 million in the summer of the 2022–23 season and recent reports have suggested that the signing was immediately regretted by the Spanish tactical genius, as he thought that the player didn’t suit his style of play at all when he saw him in training the very first day.
The former Barcelona legend and manager expressed his remorse earlier this month over the player’s career. He expressed that the player doesn’t deserve any of this but the manager struggles to see him fit for the holding midfield role in his team.
“I feel so sorry for my decision for him. I’ve said that many times. He doesn’t deserve what has happened to him and I’m so sorry. I visualize the team and I struggle to see him.”
To support the context, Phillips featured for only 593 minutes in his debut season for the club and is always seen warming the bench, even in the current season up to now. He has played just 31 matches for the club and is obviously the third choice in his position, with Rodri and now even Mateo Kovačić ahead of him in the pecking order.
The former Leeds United player had been weighing his options to leave this winter window with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and other clubs seemingly interested, as the player’s profile is scarcely rare and he was a really talented gem on the rise before the City move materialized.
With the player’s loan transfer to the Hammers confirmed, it certainly seems like he has found a way out of this mess for himself, even though temporarily only. Do you think Kalvin Phillips deserves a second chance to revive his career and could Hammers be the right place for him to do so? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
