Domantas Sabonis and the Sacramento Kings have agreed to a hefty five-year, $217 million deal extension, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The deal will cost $195 million in new money, with the remaining $22 million coming from his base pay for 2023–24.
The seldom-used renegotiate-and-extend clause in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which permits clubs with salary cap room to give their players instant raises as part of the extension, was employed by the Kings. The center’s compensation will therefore increase by $15 million this season, from $22 million to nearly $37 million, a huge increase.

Tyrese Haliburton was traded to the Indiana Pacers in return for Sabonis, and the Kings had no misgivings about doing so because it was a win-win situation for both organizations. The point guard whom Indiana acquired was then given a contract extension of up to $260 million.
