LeBron James’s influence: how he got Lionel Messi speaking English, uniting two athletic worlds

Lionel Messi made his debut for new club Inter Miami on Friday in a Leagues Cup victory against Liga MX side Cruz Azul. The Argentine started on the bench but was substituted in the 54th minute after much applause from the fans.

The game was trailing 1-1 until the 94th minute when a free kick was given to Inter Miami near the goal. Messi calmly put the ball in the net grabbing a winning goal in his debut game. The debut game also hosted a lot of famous personalities who wanted to see the Argentine superstar up close. The VIP area was full of iconic athletes such as basketball superstar Lebron James, and tennis icon Serena Williams. David Beckham was also there, though it was expected as he is the team’s co-owner.

Lionel Messi sends special English message for LeBron James

Basketball superstar Lebron James was present and seen recording the game. Even before the game started, the two met and hugged it out. The moment of the two sports uniting went viral on social media platforms.

LeBron shared an image of the moment on his Instagram account, with the caption, “Welcome brother!!! Always good to see and be in the presence of GREATNESS!!!”.

Messi then took to Instagram where he thanked LeBron for his kind gestures towards him. He both commented on his post and shared it on his Instagram story. But his comment and story itself went viral, amassing much discussion among Twitter fans.

It is known that Messi is not fluent in English, and widely assumed he doesn’t even speak the language. He also always posts his images on his social media platforms along with Spanish captions. But in yesterday’s LeBron post, he wrote the caption in English. He wrote, “Thanks a lot brother!!! It was really nice to see you!”

The exchange went viral with many surprised and happy to see Messi write in English.

Lionel Messi reportedly speaks English with Inter Miami teammates

Not just on Instagram, it seems Messi has even picked up a bit of English since arriving in the USA.

Recently, Inter Miami right back DeAndre Yedlin spoke about Messi. He said that the Argentine knows the language a bit and has spoken in it with his new teammates.

“His English is enough to get by. He talks to everyone. I didn’t know Messi was in the group chat. Campana needed tickets for the event on Sunday. Messi popped in ‘How many do you need?’

It is good to know that even a global icon like Messi takes the time and effort to connect with his new teammates. Messi will next take on Atlanta United on July 26 which will be his MLS debut.
