British racing megastar Sir Lewis Hamilton, 37, is currently driving for Toto Wolff’s Mercedes team alongside George Russell, who are now trailing behind Team Red Bull and Team Ferrari in this year’s Formula One Championship, but ahead of the new season, the German CEO hinted at the potential Lewis Hamilton contract extension to the media.
Wolff, the head of Mercedes, believes that Hamilton will achieve an eighth world championship with the team when he retires. Wolff also speculates that the British driver may continue competing in the race for a further five years, and he reached a two-year agreement at the beginning of this season, as Lewis was seen more determined than ever to continue in Formula One.
Toto is certain that the Mercedes driver will have another opportunity to beat Michael Schumacher’s milestone of seven-lifetime championship wins as the Mercedes driver was dubiously denied the world championship by Max Verstappen on the penultimate lap of the previous season.
Speaking of a contract extension, the German CEO of Mercedes asserted, “I am absolutely certain that Lewis can win the eighth world title with us, I have no doubt that we will be extending [beyond 2023]. Science today can make sports people, if they are disciplined, go much longer than in the past. Look at Fernando Alonso. He is 41, and he is still mega, so no doubt, there are many years left in Lewis.” Hamilton, who is presently 37, may continue to dedicate himself to Formula One long into his forties, according to Wolff.
At the beginning of this season, Lewis also hinted that his Formula One career wouldn’t be over at the end of the season as he has a lot to do with his current team’s cars. Other than that, he denied all the rumors surrounding his retirement, as he stubbornly claimed that he himself was his decision maker. The seven-time world champion’s current contract ends at the conclusion of the next season, but somehow the 37-year-old has already made it known that he wants to race in Formula 1 until he is 40.
Hamilton has rejected rumors of retiring despite a challenging season in which he is still searching for his inaugural race victory as Mercedes looks to recover from a disastrous 2022 season next year. As a consequence, Wolff also assured the fans of a stronger comeback with Lewis by saying, “So I have no doubt that whatever we agree on a contract extension, which is going to happen, that we both are always going to discuss, very openly, what does the future hold.”
