In a recent report by El Nacional, seven time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has requested his former teammate Sergio Busquets to stay at Barcelona amid rumors of Messi making a potential return to the Catalan side next season.
As the 35-year old Argentinian is nearing the end of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, many clubs joined in the race to secure the arguably greatest of all time. Saudi club Al-Hilal have reportedly made a blockbuster deal that will make Messi the highest paid soccer player of all time.
However, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Messi will prefer to stay in Europe and aim for his fifth Champions League title. There are also speculations that the Argentinian talisman will make a return to his former club, FC Barcelona.

Latest reports indicate that Messi has insisted his former teammate Sergio Busquets remain at Camp Nou, as he will potentially be making a dream return to the club.
Sergio Busquets, the 34-year old Spanish midfielder, has been with FC Barcelona ever since his professional debut for the club in 2008. He and Messi were long-term teammates at Barcelona before Messi left at the end of 2021 for Paris Saint-Germain.
Sergio is the current captain of FC Barcelona, but his contract with the club is also ending at the end of the current season. It was expected that Sergio would make a decision about his future after the international break, but as of now, there has been no progress.
Sergio Busquets has been key to FC Barcelona’s success, just like Lionel Messi
At age 10, Busquets enrolled in Barcelona’s La Masia youth academy, and he eventually made his first-team debut in 2008, under manager Pep Guardiola.
He quickly established himself as a key player on the team with his excellent ball control, passing, and defensive skills. With Barcelona, he has amassed an impressive trophy case, including eight La Liga championships, three UEFA Champions League crowns, and seven Copa del Rey trophies.
Busquets is a mainstay in the Spanish national team, and he has competed for Spain at the FIFA World Cup twice (in 2010 and 2018) as well as the UEFA European Championships in 2012 and 2016. He is highly regarded for his coolness under pressure, tactical acumen, and ability to defuse dangerous attacks.
