Lionel Messi and his future with Paris Saint Germain are growing more and more uncertain with every passing day amid a contract standoff. New reports from France have shed some more light on the situation.
Before the World Cup, it was reported that Lionel was closer to staying at PSG with a verbal agreement already in place between the two parties. However, since winning the coveted tournament, Messi has changed his stance. His representatives, Jorge and Rodrigo Messi, his father and brother respectively have met with PSG’s top directors including the club’s football advisor Luis Campos. No agreement was reached though further talks have been scheduled.
What is preventing Lionel Messi from signing a renewal at PSG?
Another reason for the contract renewal failure is Messi’s willingness to play for a good team with a chance of winning big trophies. PSG’s knockout stage elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich is a big factor. Dressing room problems have also been reported with a feud between key players of the team.
PSG’s future prospect seems to be in jeopardy in light of recent developments. Neymar Jr. reportedly is to be offloaded this summer for failing to live up to expectations. Kylian Mbappe is also regretting staying at PSG and is looking to find a new home. Manager Christopher Galtier has also lost the respect of the squad and could be sacked in the summer.
The club is also under huge pressure from UEFA for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. They may face sanctions in the summer if they do not cut back on costs before the start of next season. This could see multiple high-wage players like Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos leave.
What is next for Lionel Messi?
As such, Messi’s renewal depends on the concreteness of any project explained to him. His current contract expires this summer. Messi could then leave for free with many interested parties including but not limited to the likes of Barcelona, Inter Miami, and even a Saudi club.

Messi’s father was seen in Riyadh on Tuesday adding fuel to the fire of a PSG exit rumor. But it was later revealed he went there only to talk with the Ministry of Sports in the country regarding nursery schools.
After a tough first year at PSG, Messi has now found some comfort in his second season. Currently, Messi has 13 goals and 13 assists in Ligue 1 this season. He is the highest assist provider in the league. At the World Cup, he won the Golden Ball for carrying Argentina to the trophy with seven goals. Messi also went on to win FIFA’s The Best award for his brilliant year.
