The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has introduced the concept of a blue card. The concept is about the cynical fouls on the football pitch; a similar concept is used in hockey.
Since its introduction, the Blue Card rule has received a lot of criticism, and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp did not hold back while criticizing IFAB regarding this new rule.
Jurgen Klopp rubbishes IFAB’s blue cards idea
During the press conference, Jurgen Klopp expressed his views on the concept of the blue card. He said, “In my opinion, we should make everything as straightforward as possible, especially for referees. They have a challenging job, often emotionally charged, especially concerning what happens after matches. I believe introducing the blue card will only create more opportunities for mistakes.”
The Liverpool manager took a sly dig at the IFAB by saying that he has yet to see a good idea introduced by them: “it doesn’t sound like a fantastic idea at the moment… but I can’t remember the last fantastic idea from these guys IFAB and I am 56!”
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is also not convinced by the concept of the blue card and said the bigger issue is VAR, which needs to be addressed first.
He said, “I don’t think people will get surprised by my thoughts on it. I struggle to understand this urgency all of a sudden to bring in new things, I don’t know if there’s that much with the game as I see it. My biggest issue with the game right now is that VAR changed the experience, whether you are a player or a supporter of whatever you are I think it’s changed the experience of football.”
What are the new blue card rules?
In football, red and yellow cards are used to punish the individual for their fouls and breaching the code of conduct.
Similarly, a blue card will result in the player serving a 10-minute suspension and returning to the field after serving the punishment. If they receive two blue cards or a yellow and a blue, they will be sent off with a red card.
