Results this week have gone from bad to worse for Manchester United, as they failed to get any points at St. James Park against a very motivated Newcastle United side. United’s loss against Newcastle means that the Magpies have overtaken them to move into the top six of the Premier League table. The loss ends United’s short three-game winning streak in the league.
Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute strike was enough to get Newcastle all three points against the Red Devils. The win also meant that Newcastle has won three consecutive games against United across all competitions for the first time in 101 years, as previewed. United, however, with this defeat, continue another very unwanted record in the league and seem to be clueless against the top teams.
Manchester United continue unwanted record
Manchester United are facing the heat after not only losing to Newcastle but also because they failed to threaten the home side’s goal and made zero chances in the game. Against Galatasaray, it was defensive lapses, and against Newcastle, it was a non-existent attack that haunted United.
With the defeat at Newcastle, Manchester United have now failed to win an away game against any of the top eight clubs in the last two years. The last time they won away against a side in the top 8, it was September 2021, when they defeated West Ham 2-1.
United are on the brink of elimination in the Champions League and have now fallen four points short of Aston Villa at fourth, who still have a game in hand to play. United now have ten defeats in all competitions this season, and the worst part is that it is still early December. However, it seems to be a regular story for Erik ten Hag’s side now, who admitted his team was far from Newcastle’s level.
Huge test awaits with tough run of fixtures in December
Manchester United have a lot to worry about as their poor run of form meets a very hectic and tough schedule in January. United host Chelsea next, with the Blues yet to be defeated by any of the traditional top six of the league.
United also have their last Champions League group stage game left, against group winners Bayern Munich. United then travel directly to Merseyside to play archrivals Liverpool, followed by tough games against West Ham and Aston Villa.
United would hope to turn their season around by getting results during this time, but they also fear that a bad December would essentially mean the season is over.
