Gerard Pique is in the headlines again for all the wrong reasons as he seemingly has a public scuffle with ex – teammate Frenkie De Jong. The Spaniard has been ‘Notorious’ for getting into trouble while he is out in the public. He is not even careful with the words he picks which has generated many negative headlines.
Why is Gerard Pique in the headlines and what does Frenkie De Jong have to do with it?
Pique announced a shock mid-season retirement a few months ago. He did not even get on the pitch for his final match as he was sent off despite being on the bench for arguing with the referee.
But that was not why he was in the headlines then. He had a very public and ugly fallout with his ex-partner, the Colombian musician Shakira which led to their breaking up. Reports suggest that Pique cheated on the Colombian despite having two kids together with Shakira.
What has Gerard Pique done now?
Pique was seemingly at a Barca match watching the game from the stands when current midfielder Frenkie De Jong arrived with his fiancee Mikky Kiemeney. Frenkie came up to Pique and asked him to switch seats so that he could sit with his partner, however for some reason Pique refused. Frenkie and Mikky were both left perplexed over this confusing and disrespectful behavior.
Frenkie De Jong was linked heavily with a move to Manchester United in the summer as the Catalans were looking to raise capital to balance their books. New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag also pushed for the move as he felt his ex-player at Ajax would be perfect for his new club.
Despite having an offer accepted, the move never materialized as Frenkie did not want to move away from his dream club despite all their troubles. United had the last laugh though as they knocked out Barcelona from European competitions this season when they beat the Spanish giants over two legs in the Europa League.
