Manchester United to continue venturing Italian market with Erik Ten Hag hoping to rejoin Sofyan Amrabat

Manchester United know they need to bolster their squad for the next season if they want to compete for trophies again. The Red Devils, despite finishing third in the Premier League, had some inconsistent performances throughout the season. United also made it to the finals of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, winning the former against Newcastle but losing the latter to Manchester City.

United’s performance could have been better if they had enough squad depth to cover for injuries to key players. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, two of their regular starters, were lost to injuries at the most important times of the season.

Although loan signings were made in January to cover for injuries, they almost didn’t make any impact, especially Wout Weghorst, who only managed one Premier League goal in over 17 appearances. United are trying to learn from their mistakes and are looking to strengthen their squad for next season.

Reports Claim United Monitoring Amrabat Situation for Potential Move

Sofyan Amrabat announced himself to the world last December when his performances led Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup for the first time in the country’s history. The versatile midfielder played against some of the world’s best players and managed to hold his own.

Reports now suggest that United are monitoring Sofyan Amrabat very closely and could tempt him away from Serie A this summer, where he currently plies his trade with Fiorentina. This would mean United would have the depth in the midfield they dangerously lacked last season. The Moroccan midfielder played under Erik Ten Hag at FC Utrecht, which may prove decisive in United’s pursuit of the Fiorentina star. Amrabat has huge respect for the Manchester United manager. He glowingly talks about their time together at FC Utrecht.

This means that next season, United will have a midfield full of star players like Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, and Sofyan Amrabat if the deal goes through. However, the Red Devils may have to part ways with either Fred or Scott McTominay in order to make room for Amrabat.

United prime target Andre Onana played under Ten Hag

It’s no surprise why Erik Ten Hag is insistent on Andre Onana. They worked together at Ajax and won a lot of trophies. The duo even took Ajax to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League against all odds in 2019.

In that season’s Champions League, Ajax beat the likes of Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus to make it to the semis. Ajax would have made it to the final if they had not conceded that late Lucas Moura goal.

While Erik Ten Hag continued to win trophies for Ajax, Andre Onana was banned for an initial twelve months for doping before being reduced to nine months by UEFA.

Will Andre Onana make an impact on United’s performance next season?
