Marketa Vondrousova came like a bolt from the blue to destroy Elina Svitolina’s fairytale at Wimbledon 2023. Marketa is the most unexpected player to reach the finals of the Wimbledon 2023 ladies’ singles. This underdog hasn’t gotten past 1R in Wimbledon but this year she is the first-ever unseeded player to get to the Wimbledon finals.
The tennis world never heeded Marketa but she seems to be a very tricky opponent to play against. She started playing at 4 and was determined to make it to the big leagues but injuries and surgeries kept coming her way. In this unforeseen final, the 24 years old Czech player will be playing her second Grand Slam final since the 2019 Roland Garros.
Marketa Vondrousova secures spot for the Wimbledon final to face Ons Jabeur
Marketa played against the favorite Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the semi-final. Elina was flying high and expressed how this Wimbledon season is the second happiest thing since the birth of her daughter. However, Marketa made sure to obliterate her opponent to proceed to the finals (6-3, 6-3).
Vondrousova displayed sure dominance and when Elina attempted to slowly rise back up, she obliterated her. Her offense and defense in this match were impeccable. The Czech player showed how to drain a hefty amount of mental and physical energy from the opponent.

Now, she’ll have to play against the Netflix star Ons Jabeur. Ons is a favorite this season and is also last year’s Wimbledon finalist. Marketa’s opponent has an eccentric style of play that could leave the players perplexed on any surface court. She also has the experience of taking the pressure of Grand Slam finals and so will be a difficult match for the Czech stunner.
Marketa Vondrousova makes hilarious tattoo wager with her coach
“I cannot believe it” is what Marketa said after winning the semifinal match. Evidently, she had not expected to get so far into the Wimbledon. Having made it into the finals, she had to call up her cat sitter and fly her husband in for him to watch her play her Grand Slam final.
Now, she also might have to call up her tattoo artist since she has a fun wager with her coach. “I have a bet with [Jan Mertl]… If I win a Grand Slam, he’s going to get one, so I hope I will,” she smiled. Her coach might have to get ready considering her domination in the semis and her spot in the finals.
The final is going to be entertaining. Is it going to be the inexperienced mentalist or the favorite all-rounder to take the Wimbledon title this season? Let us know in the comments below.
