Marlon Tapales puts all on the line vs Naoya Inoue
On Tuesday, WBC/WBO junior featherweight titlist Naoya Inoue will face IBF/WBA counterpart Marlon Tapales in a 12-round contest at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.
After rising through the rankings in the Philippines, Tapales faced David Sanchez (MD 12) in Mexico and lost by a slim margin in 2013. He defeated the unbeaten Shohei Omari (TKO 2) in a WBO bantamweight title eliminator held in Japan towards the end of 2015.
After that, he traveled to Thailand, where he won the title by twice coming off the mat to defeat Pungluang Sor Singyu (TKO 11). Tapales traveled back to Japan for a rematch with Omari in his first defense. Although he missed weight and was stripped of his title, he was able to stop Omari in the 11th round.
After dominating and stopping Paul Butler in 11 straight rounds, Inoue emerged as the undisputed bantamweight champion. Adding the WBC and WBO crowns to his expanding collection of achievements, Inoue moved up in weight and looked just as spectacular as ever, bludgeoning Stephen Fulton (TKO 8), the general consensus No.1-rated junior featherweight. At 118, there was nothing left to conquer.
Filpino boxer Marlon Tapales will challenge unified bantamweight world champion Naoya Inoue on December 26 in a highly anticipated matchup. While fight fans are excited to see Tapales back in action, less is known about the 31-year-old’s life outside the ring.
