Mavs’ owner reflects on Luka Doncic’s compatibility with Pacers’ star while addressing smoking’s impact on team culture

Mavs’ owner Mark Cuban recently shook the NFL world as he reflected on the 2020 NBA draft, revealing Maverick’s failed trade efforts for the now-Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton. He also shared insights on what he thinks about the players who smoke and its impact on the team as a whole.

While NBA players are usually expected to lead a more disciplined life and avoid using drugs, smoking is a practice that’s often swept under the rug despite the dangerous effects it can have on an individual.

Mark Cuban reveals Mavs’ bid to pair Luka Doncic and Tyrese Haliburton

The Mavericks were doing well with a 43-win season during the NBA bubble times and they knew Luka Doncic would need more help to take the Mavs to the championship level. Cuban had a very interesting idea, he wanted to trade up in the 2020 draft and choose Tyrese Haliburton as the third pick and then pair the promising young point guard with Luka Doncic.

But the intention of the Mavs was never fulfilled and the Sacramento Kings picked up Haliburton in their 13th pick. 2 years later in 2022, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle ended things with the Dallas Mavericks and went on to join the Indiana Pacers. In his first season at Pacers, they acquired Haliburton from the Kings, and ever since then, the young point guard has shown tremendous growth.

In a recent episode of the Pat Bev Pod featuring Mark Cuban, Mark discussed the matter, “Tyrese Haliburton, We did everything we could to trade up and get him-Did everything we could. Now obviously, Rick was our coach at the time, Rick goes to Indiana, what’s the first deal he does?”

Mavs’ owner talks smoking’s impact on team dynamics

Reports revealed that the NBA had removed the penalties a player could face for smoking Marijuana. The rules were updated and marijuana was removed from the anti-drug testing program, this practice started back in the 2019-20 season.

The rules may have changed but Mark Cuban has different views and expectations from the players who play for his team. Cuban still does not like to support players who smoke too much marijuana as it can lead to a disruption in team culture. When asked about the topic Cuban said, “No lie, I’ve traded guys because they smoke too much,”

The Mavs owner further goes on to talk about how a player who smokes too much can influence young players who have just entered the team and are trying to figure out their way but don’t know much about team culture.

What do you think of the failed Haliburton deal? And what are your thoughts about Cuban’s views on marijuana? We are eager to know your opinions so drop down in the comments and let us know.
