After departing WWE in 2022, Mercedes Mone, previously known as Sasha Banks eventually made her way back to NJPW this year. She trained in NJPW and STARDOM in Japan to become an iconic figure internationally as a female wrestler.
At NJPW Resurgence, Mone was competing for the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship, when she suffered a fractured ankle. She was recently seen without her medical boot, even though she is still injured. More information has been revealed about Mercedes Mone’s injury.
Mercedes Mone injury update
Mercedes Mone, the former IWGP Women’s Champion, has been out of action since May 2023 due to an ankle injury. Many of her supporters have speculated that she would return to AEW. The bout between Mone and Willow Nightingale to become the first NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion ended with Mone suffering an injury. The injury did not stop Mone from making a surprise appearance in London for AEW All In.
There is now positive update about her health. However, following her rehabilitation, the American actress no longer has to wear the walking boot. Her return date is still up in the air, but considering her appearance at AEW All In, she may be competing for NJPW and STARDOM in addition to AEW.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, “Mercedes Mone is now out of her walking boot. She’s still kept her timetable quiet about returning to wrestling. The expectation, given they showed her at All In in the crowd more than once, is that she would be working here and with New Japan and/or Stardom.”
The former WWE star shared cryptic message
Mercedes Mone recently posted a photo remembering her last NXT moment of 2015, when she was officially promoted to the main roster during NXT Takeover: Respect. In a close match, finished in a 3-2 victory for Bayley, she defended her NXT Women’s Championship against Banks. Although Bayley ultimately prevailed, Sasha Banks was the clear show-stealer.
At that time, Mone thrived as a heel, despite her popularity among fans. She used several dirty tricks to impede her opponent, reducing even little Bayley to tears as she watched the farewell moment from the stands. After the bout, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon came out to wish Sasha a tearful goodbye from NXT. Her adoring fans probably thought the same thing and asked her to come back to WWE on Twitter. She is not, in fact, retiring from the sport; instead, fans will soon be able to see a 31-year-old wrestler on a brand-new show.
