The Los Angeles Chargers released their wide receiver, Mike Williams, last week. It was a money-saving move that led the WR to bid farewell to the Chargers after seven years.
Now, Mike Williams has signed with the New York Jets for the upcoming season. He recently talked about his decision and shared the reason behind it.
Mike Williams signing for Jets reminds him of fruitful partnership with Keenan Allen
On Tuesday, the Jets announced the official signing of Mike Willaims on a $15 million deal. The WR shared that one of the main aspects he is excited about in this journey is the prospect of playing with Garrett Wilson because it reminds him of WR Keenan Allen.
The former Chargers player played with Keenan Allen in Los Angeles. He was part of a lethal 1-2 punch at wide receiver with Keenan. But now he is excited to form a new bond with Garrett who he believes is similar to Keenan.
“Singing with Garrett, he reminds me a bit of Keenan. Similar style of play, great route runners and I feel like we can complement each other in that area. The running game is pretty good, the defense is elite, so I feel like we have a pretty good opportunity in front of us,” Williams said.
This season, the Jets have made several additions to their roster after suffering last season. The team has bolstered its offensive line by signing tackles Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses, along with guard John Simpson.
The team will have a strong roster, including Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor as QBs, Garrett Wilson and Jason Brownlee as wide receivers, and Mike Williams as well. However, Williams didn’t only join the team for Garrett Wilson; Aaron Rodgers was also a big reason.
Mike Williams wants to play with Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson
Mike Williams signed with the Jets because he would get a chance to play with Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson. Aaron Rodgers is considered one of the most talented QBs in the league. The 2023 season wasn’t kind to him, as the QB missed the entire season because of injury.
However, for the 2024 season, expectations are extremely high from Rodgers that he will help the team reach the playoffs. Mike Williams also wanted to be with such a talented QB and the prospect of playing with him influenced his decision to move to the Jets.
“I just felt like it was a great fit for me. Aaron, I want to be able to play with him. Pick his brain, learn from him.”
The reason Williams wants to play with Garrett Wilson, who changed his jersey number is because he is similar to Keenan Allen. But the reason he wants to play with Rodgers is because he wants to learn from him.
The WR also emphasized that the team’s situation is looking good for the upcoming season, which made him satisfied with his move. Hopefully, this decision by Mike Williams will prove beneficial for him and he will contribute to the team’s success for the upcoming season.
