That famous Champions League comeback against PSG in 2019 remains one of the most memorable moments in Manchester United’s history. Mason Greenwood came on in the 87th minute to make his professional debut.
A year later, he was given the infamous number 11 shirt by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, following in the footsteps of the legendary Ryan Giggs. This was only a reward for his incredible work the previous season, where he scored in three consecutive Premier League games.
Things haven’t quite gone well for the youngster since then. He was arrested on January 30th, 2022, after videos were released of his alleged assault on his girlfriend.
Why Was Mason Greenwood Arrested?
Mason Greenwood last played a football game on the 22nd of January, 2021. He was included in the starting lineup to face West Ham United by then-under-fire Ralf Ragnick. Eight days later, the news of his arrest broke out.
The United Star man was detained on the suspicion of assault and rape lodged by his partner. The Crown Prosecution Services (CPS) office confirmed this in a statement. “The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm,” the statement read.
The case dragged on for months, but he was cleared of all criminal charges, as reported by Goal on February 2023. This was met with mixed reactions from fans and players, particularly the club’s women’s team, who were reportedly not comfortable with him returning to the club.
Will Greenwood Stay at Man Utd?
Mason Greenwood’s situation has divided opinions across the football world. Manchester United claim to be conducting an internal investigation to determine whether or not the player should be drafted back into the team. It’s been four months since all charges were dropped, and the fact that the internal investigation is yet to be concluded is worrying for fans.
Many want to see him back at the club. He’s clearly being missed in the team, with some of his teammates underperforming in his absence.
