Mr.Socko: Mick Foley’s genius idea to get a sock over in star-studded Attitude Era

Mick Foley’s Mr.Socko is one of the most legendary gimmicks and Foley himself is one of the greatest performers to ever grace the squared circle. His hardcore and never-quit attitude turned him into one of the most popular babyfaces among the WWE Universe despite Vince McMahon not being particularly thrilled with his character.

Be it Cactus Jack, Dude Love, or Mankind, he used to play his part to perfection. Fans recently pointed out that it’s the 25th Anniversary of the debut of Mr.Socko with a post on X marking the occasion.

Mr.Socko was introduced 25 years ago on this day

It’s been 25 years since the debut of Mr.Socko where he debuted when Mankind tried to cheer up a hospitalized Vince McMahon with a sock puppet and other things such as a clown. The Internet Wrestling Community pointed out that it’s the 25th Anniversary of the occasion. This gimmick would take Mick Foley to the next level in a star-studded Attitude Era. He also played a huge role as an inspiration for Bray Wyatt’s character.

The storyline also gave us one of the most famous clips where Stone Cold attacks a hospitalized Vince McMahon. Mick Foley revealed in ‘Have a Nice Day’ that Al Snow came up with Mr. Socko who suggested he should bring a sock puppet to cheer up an irritable Mr.McMahon. He also brought a female clown when in the segment he was implying he brought a stripper to cheer up Vince.

The Rock & Sock Connection

Mr.Socko boosted Mick Foley’s popularity with the WWE Universe to the next level and earned him a world-famous win against The Rock for the WWF Championship with the help of Stone Cold Steve Austin, who received one of the loudest pops in the history of professional wrestling. He also went on to have iconic matches such as the memorable Hell in a Cell match against Undertaker.

The Rock and Mick Foley would also team up together in the future. The Rock and Sock Connection is one of the most famous tag teams of the Attitude Era as they even won tag-team gold.

It was WWE’s first full-time main event team of former enemies. Both men won their first WWF Championship defeating the other. The man who invented Mr.Socko, Al Snow, was the reason for The Rock and Sock Connection losing their tag-team gold. WWE pairing up the two main event superstars was an excellent booking decision and The Rock teaming with Mankind at WrestleMania 20 was also his final WWE match before Rocky’s 8-year hiatus.
