On Friday, Michael Jordan, a six-time NBA champion, is commemorating his 60th birthday by contributing a $10 million donation to Make-A-Wish. This donation marks the largest amount ever given by an individual in the 43-year history of the organization.
Michael Jordan aspires that his philanthropic gesture will motivate others to assist in granting the wishes of the children who are still waiting for their desires to be fulfilled.
“For the past 34 years, it’s been an honor to partner with Make-A-Wish and help bring a smile and happiness to so many kids,” Jordan said in a news release. “Witnessing their strength and resilience during such a tough time in their lives has truly been an inspiration.”
In 1989, Michael Jordan, who currently owns the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA, initially provided his support to Make-A-Wish. He has since fulfilled the desires of countless children worldwide and continues to be one of the most frequently requested celebrity wish-granters.
His profound influence on wish kids and their families earned him the title of Make-A-Wish Chief Wish Ambassador in 2008 for what the organization called the “life-changing impacts he has had on wish kids and their families.”
“I can’t think of a better birthday gift than seeing others join me in supporting Make-A-Wish so that every child can experience the magic of having their wish come true,” Jordan said.
The generous multimillion-dollar contribution from Jordan will establish an endowment aimed at fulfilling the wishes of children and young individuals suffering from severe illnesses in the future.
Make-A-Wish America chief executive Leslie Motter said, “Everyone knows about Michael’s legacy on the basketball court, but it’s what he has consistently done off the court when no one’s watching that makes him a true legend for wish families and the wider Make-A-Wish community.”
Jordan is widely acknowledged as the most exceptional basketball player in history, securing six NBA Finals MVP awards in addition to his championship rings. He was awarded five season MVP accolades and was a 14-time All-Star during his extensive career, spanning from 1984 to 2003.
His $10 million donation to Make-A-Wish is a testament to his ongoing commitment to using his wealth and influence to make a positive impact on the world. As one of the most successful basketball players of all time, Jordan’s generosity is a reminder that true success isn’t just measured by athletic achievements, but by the ability to give back to those in need.
