New York Jets wide receiver coach Miles Austin to appeal amid gambling suspension

The NFL is well-known for not backing down from any opportunity to impose penalties. New York Jets wide receiver coach Miles Austin’s recent one-year suspension supports the statement. He had been accused of and suspended for gambling misconduct.

How Miles Austin got suspended?

Yesterday, Miles was suspended for violating the NFL’s gambling policy, which is indefinite (at least one-year pending appeal), ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed. The suspension came into being after it was known that Miles Austin has been involved in gambling.

Miles was not gambling in football but NFL prohibits any sort of involvement in Gambling which further solidifies the intent of the NFL to penalize when it gets a chance causing the suspension of Jet’s coach.

Miles on the other hand is to appeal the suspension. In light of the sanction, his attorney and agent, William P. Deni Jr., claimed that Austin didn’t wager on any NFL team.

Deni JR. also gave a statement, saying, “The NFL suspended Miles Austin for wagering from a legal mobile account on table games and non-NFL professional sports. Miles did not wager on any NFL game in violation of the Gambling Policy for NFL Personnel. He has been fully cooperative with the NFL’s investigation. He is appealing his suspension.”

However, according to the NFL gambling policy, all coaches are barred from any kind of sports gambling, not just football. The policy’s exact words are, “All NFL Personnel other than Players are further prohibited from placing, soliciting, or facilitating bets on any other professional (e.g., NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA, USTA, MLS), college (e.g., NCAA basketball), international (e.g., World Baseball Classic, World Cup), or Olympic sports competition, tournament, or event.”

Austin was also betting from the team’s facility, which is also against the NFL’s gambling policy. The authority found out about his gambling activity on websites. The NFL published a statement regarding the suspension: “The league will have no further comment until that appeal has been resolved.”

Miles Austin’s Coaching Career

Miles Austin’s coaching career hasn’t been long enough for him to face such suspensions, as he started coaching the San Francisco 49ers as an offensive quality controller in 2019. Before that, he played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2006–2013. Finally, the 38-year-old landed in New York in 2021 with former colleague Robert Saleh.
