Jimmy Garoppolo was one of the NFL players who had the most uncertainty about his future in the NFL. The QB is facing suspension for substance use, which will not allow him to play in the first two games of the 2024 season.
Considering this complicated situation, it felt difficult for any team to join hands with Garoppolo. However, he has already signed a new contract with a new franchise.
Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly agreed to a 1 year, $4.5M contract
Last year, Jimmy Garoppolo was tested and it was found that he used performance-enhancing substances that violated the NFL rules. For this reason, he was suspended for two games.
This suspension allowed the Las Vegas Raiders to void the salary guarantee in Garoppolo’s contract for 2024, which was $11.25 million. The team decided to cut him but they would still have to pay this money to the QB.
However, Jimmy Garoppolo was quick to secure his future for the upcoming season. He has signed a 1-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams. The deal is worth $4.4 million and up to $12 million, including the incentives.
Garoppolo wasn’t offered the starting position but instead will serve as a backup QB for the Rams. He signed a 3-year deal with the Raiders last offseason but that couldn’t work out for that long as the QB suffered injuries and suspension.
The QB played in seven games only and was benched. He completed 65.1% of his passes for 1,205 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions.
Now, he has joined the Rams but his suspension won’t allow him to play in the first two games. The QB can take part in any other activities of the team and then continue with the Rams which he is excited for.
Jimmy Garoppolo explains why he signed with Rams
Jimmy Garoppolo talked about his decision to play with the Los Angeles Rams for the upcoming season. First, he emphasized his suspension situation explaining that it made all this process difficult and uncertain. But he was happy when the Rams came in and offered him a deal.
“With the suspension situation it was difficult but when Rams came in it felt real,” the QB said.
Jimmy Garoppolo acknowledged the quality of players on the Rams’ roster, which played a significant role in his decision-making process.
“Obviously good players all around. That’s a big part of it. Talking to Sean on the phone, him just running me through offense and things that he had in mind, it really became appetizing.”
He found the prospect of working with head coach Sean McVay appealing, especially given his familiarity with the coaching staff and the team’s playing style.
“And I know a lot of the coaches here, so a lot of familiarity in that aspect. And then having played against the Rams a lot in my career, I’ve seen a lot of good things from L.A.”
Interestingly, Jimmy Garoppolo had previously played against the Rams while he was with the San Francisco 49ers. But he is happy to now play with his former rivals.
