The Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest during the game that pushed him to the edge of life and death will be the scariest memory of this NFL season that nobody dares to experience again.
On January 2, the Bills’ safety suffered a cardiac arrest following an attempt to tackle his opponent, the Cincinnati Bengals’ Tee Higgins. Later, in order to survive, he must undergo a series of medical procedures and treatments. However, after all, that happens, the youngster is free from a possible setback.
For this reason, his return to the field is one of the most circulated topics among Bills fans as well as the whole NFL community.
What did the NFLPA medical director say regarding Damar Hamlin’s return?
Given Damar’s life-threatening injury, it would appear insensitive to the fans to rush him to the field. There needs to be proper procedure and assurance from medical personnel that the player can play again.
On that note, NFLPA medical director Thom Mayer issued a statement on Wednesday during a Heart to a Heart radio show. “I don’t want to get into HIPAA issues, but I guarantee you that Damar Hamlin will play professional football again,” Mayer said.

It would bring a sigh of relief and a positive vibe among the fans, but after they experience a handful of negligences regarding athletes’ health and safety, it still sounds somewhat questionable to us.
Moreover, Thom’s word choice might put us in a conundrum by using ‘guarantee,’ and it feels like they were rushing. Previously, on that infamous evening of the Bills vs. Bengals game, the NFL forced the players to continue playing despite seeing a human being stretchered out with his life in his hands.
On the other hand, as an NFLPA medical director, he must’ve put Hamlin and his family’s welfare ahead of the NFL’s public image and profit. But as fans, we want to see our favorite players playing at their full potential in a safe and secure environment.
