Novak Djokovic capitalises on Shanghai break by indulging in his passion for sports besides tennis

Besides a knack for breaking tennis records and slamming crosscourt winners, Novak Djokovic also loves being a spectator, sitting in the stands, munching snacks and vehemently cheering his favourite team on.

The Serbian superstar is a passionate sportsman, one who credits his love for different sports early in childhood as a factor in his tennis success. After his US Open and Davis Cup victories, Novak had time off as he withdrew from successive Asian hardcourt tournaments. He was seen relaxing in the stands of a football game and even participated in some golf.

Djokovic seen attending UEFA Champions League match

Whilst back home in Belgrade, Novak Djokovic attended a football match between Crvena Zvezda (also known as Red Star Belgrade) and Young Boys. The UEFA Group G match ended in a 2-2 draw with both teams firmly settled at the bottom of their group that includes giants Manchester City and RB Leipzig.

Djokovic cheered his home team on from the stands at the Rajko Mitic Stadium. The 24-time grand slam champion is known for his attendance in football matches, having witnessed the semifinal between AC Milan and Inter Milan in the 2022 champions league.

Novak Djokovic has talked about his relationships with athletes from different sports in the past, describing them as relatable.

“I try to maintain and nurture relationships with athletes from different sports because, as an athlete, of course, I relate to them. I identify myself what they are doing and I can understand the pain, the sacrifice, the dedication.”, he said.

He talked about his fondness of NFL legend Tom Brady and Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“You want to learn from the greats. There are things that are are so inspirational, as they are in my relationship with Tom (Brady). Zlatan (Ibrahimovic) is my favourite footballer, no doubt. His Balkan mentality is relatable. I understand and have known him for over 15 years now.”, he added.

Djokovic added to the glitz of Ryder Cup

Last week at the Ryder Cup was the All-Star day, an event that hosts athletes and celebrities alike, intended to provide broadcasters with content to screen before the tournament begins.

A myriad of professionals gathered on the golf course, including Youtuber Garrett Hilbert, footballers Gareth Bale and Andriy Shevchenko, American football wide receiver Victor Cruz, surfer Leonardo Fioravanti, formula one driver Carlos Sainz, actress Kathyrn Newton, disabled golfer Kipp Popert and the world’s most accomplished tennis player, Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic pretended to lob a ball using his tennis racquet before slamming the golf ball down the fairway using a club.

“It’s such an honor, a golden opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience,” Djokovic said. “Thanks to all the fans for coming and putting a bit of extra pressure on us on the first tee. It’s a unique experience.”
