One Michael Jordan advice helped Charles Barkley make 10x the amount of his Nike deal

The long-term friendship between two of the all-time greats, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, is well known to the NBA world. Despite the “best friends” parting ways over a decade ago, the duo’s charismatic memories have not faded yet.

Last year in his podcast, Barkley conveyed his gratitude towards the Bulls legend over an advice shared by the latter.

Michael Jordan once helped Charles Barkley earn more from his Nike contract

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley shared on his podcast how Michael Jordan’s advice played a pivotal role in maximizing his earnings from Nike. Barkley initially signed with Nike in 1992 when the stock price was $2.28.

Jordan, upon reviewing the contract, advised Barkley to negotiate with Nike, suggesting he decrease the cash portion of the deal from $3 million to one and receive the remaining amount in stocks. Barkley, swayed by his friend’s counsel, accepted the proposal.

“We both go to Nike. They signed Michael and me. Michael gave me great advice. He said, ‘hey man, why do you need all that money?’ I was like, ‘dude what are you talking about?’”

Jordan explained to him, saying, “I was looking at your contract and you are making three million dollars. Tell Nike you want one million and the rest in stock options, it is a good idea if they will be great.”

“I actually made probably 10 times the amount of money and I am still with Nike to this day,” Chuck expressed delightedly.

Michael Jordan’s partnership with Nike resulted in the iconic Air Jordan sneaker line, contributing to his estimated earnings of at least $1.5 billion since 1986.

As for the once close friendship between Charles Barkley and Jordan, it all took a sour turn after a comment that estranged them for years.

Charles Barkley’s friendship with MJ ended over one comment

Charles Barkley, known for his outspoken nature, is believed to have expressed opinions that led to a rift with the 6-time NBA Champion. The two NBA friends ended their friendship over a phone call more than a decade ago.

In an interview with 60 Minutes, Barkley explained how their disagreement brought an end to their relationship. It dates back to 2006 when Michael Jordan took on the role of the managing member of the Charlotte Bobcats (now the Charlotte Hornets). His tenure faced challenges due to questionable decisions and draft picks.

Despite their close friendship, Charles Barkley, felt the need to criticize Michael Jordan’s team because, as he put it, “I have zero credibility if I criticize other people in the same boat and not criticize my best friend.” However, he was taken aback by Jordan’s intolerance to his criticism.

When asked about the possibility of rebuilding their relationship, Barkley declined to take the initiative, stating, “He’s got my number.”

Their friendship is yet to be revived. Hopefully in future we might witness the revival of the bond between these two significant personalities, formed back in the early ’80s.
