The Los Angeles Chargers were facing some issues with their cornerback J.C. Jackson. The CB wasn’t getting along with the coach which was making his ties with the team weak. However, one incident happened which made all the changes.
The team eventually decided to trade Jackson but no one knew the reason. However, recently the possible reason for the CBs’ trade from the Chargers to the Patriots has been revealed. Fans are wondering whether it happened because of the CB’s fault or the team did this for some other reason.
J.C. Jackson benched himself in Week 4
Reportedly, during the game of the Los Angeles Chargers against the Raiders on October 1, Jackson refused to enter the game when another player was injured, citing reasons like not being warm enough to play.
The cornerback straight away refused to play in the Week 4 game. Although the defense of the team was doing well without him, this action of the CB wasn’t acceptable.
After he refused multiple coaches even tried to persuade him to not do this and to join his team on the field but the CB was persistent in not doing so.
Michael Davis, another cornerback of the team was also not able to play because of an ankle injury. Therefore the team asked Jackson to participate but he wasn’t ready to play. This attitude of the CB and some other issues led the Chargers to eventually trade J.C. Jackson.
Chargers trade Jackson to Patriots
The Chargers traded J.C. Jackson to the New England Patriots along with a seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick in 2025. The Chargers also agreed to pay a portion of the CB’s salary to facilitate the deal.
The Chargers’ performance improved without Jackson. They had a 2-0 record with other cornerbacks starting in the 2023 season, compared to a 3-4 record with the CB in the lineup over the past two seasons.
There were multiple reasons behind this trade. There were ongoing issues between the CB and the team, including disagreements with sports performance staff and coaches.
Jackson had a good training camp in 2022 but faced injuries and struggles on the field. He also had legal troubles related to a 2022 speeding incident. This trade was seen as a move to improve team chemistry for the Chargers.
The Patriots, who had cornerback injuries, welcomed J.C. Jackson back to their team, where he previously played for four seasons. His familiarity with the Patriots’ defensive system was seen as an asset.
“He’s played in this system before,” Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers told reporters, “so we just got to refresh him up on a couple of things. But he’s a great acquisition with everything that’s been going on.”
Let’s wait and watch if Jackson plays well with the Patriots or if he’ll have the same sort of issues as he had with the Chargers. But one thing is clear: the Chargers are doing great without him.
