Seth Rollins currently holds the center position on Monday Night Raw as the World Heavyweight Champion. He is scheduled to defend his championship against Finn Balor at SummerSlam 2023. Apart from his WWE commitments, Rollins also made an appearance on Logan Paul’s IMPAULSIVE TV podcast.
During the podcast session, Rollins and Logan Paul discussed various topics, and at one point, Logan even jokingly challenged Rollins for his World Heavyweight Championship. Additionally, Rollins expressed his views on Dave Meltzer’s match rating system, referring to it as “Match Ratings Are Silly.”
Dave Meltzer reacts to Rollins comment: “match ratings are silly”
After Seth Rollins called Dave Meltzer’s ratings silly, the wrestling journalist finally reacted to the comments of the Visionary. For those unfamiliar, Dave Meltzer is well-known for giving ratings to wrestling matches, which sometimes sparks controversy. He rates matches on a scale of zero to five stars, covering various promotions like WWE, AEW, IMPACT Wrestling, and NJPW.
During his appearance on the “McGuire on Wrestling” podcast, Meltzer explained his rating system and clarified that he does not hold any grudges against the World Heavyweight Champion.
He stated, “It doesn’t bother me. It’s as silly as movie ratings, food critic ratings, video game ratings, it’s all the same — it’s all opinion. If Seth can say that a match is good, then it’s a three-star match. If he can say it’s great, it’s a four-star match. They’re synonymous with each other, you see what I’m saying?”
Dave Meltzer further added that he doesn’t understand why both fans and wrestling stars themselves make such a big deal out of his ratings. He compared his ratings to those given by video game reviewers, pointing out that no one creates controversies when a game is rated low. Meltzer emphasized that he doesn’t actively track his ratings, but he is still well aware of the controversies that surround his match ratings.
Moreover, the wrestling journalist revealed that he uses the same rating system for his Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame award nominations.
Meltzer debunked match ratings system
The Wrestling journalist also revealed that this was not originally his rating system and that it was developed by Jim Cornette.
“Cornette’s the guy who came up with it, and it was based on … [using] numbers instead of saying, ‘Good, very good, [or] excellent,'”
He also disclosed that nowadays ratings are up from earlier times due to the change in the thought process of modern superstars of this generation.
Basically, it seems that Dave’s ratings were primarily used for his WON Hall of Fame nominations. However, they still became a matter of debate when fans enjoyed a match, but Meltzer gave it a poor rating. Additionally, fans noticed that Dave often gave lower ratings to WWE matches in comparison to AEW matches.
Ultimately, ratings are just numbers, and the main focus should be on whether a match entertains fans around the world or not.
