Real Madrid has spectacularly made a 2-1 comeback win against Sevilla despite missing starters such as Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr.
Sevilla hosted Real Madrid yesterday with the season coming to a conclusion. Madrid had many starting players out of action with Karim Benzema injured and Vinicius Jr deciding not to play as he still deals with the recent racist abuse he suffered at Valencia.
Eden Hazard was also left on the bench despite him wanting minutes. Ancelotti decided to instead field five midfielders, sacrificing two attackers. He previously said that Ancelotti didn’t communicate with him and wanted more playing time.
The game itself held no further significance with the league positions already decided for the two clubs. But the match was still played intensely by both sides.
How did the match go?
The game started well for Sevilla when they scored early in just the second minute. Rafa Mir scored from a loose ball after Thibaut Courtois saved a shot.
Madrid quickly came back into the game and started dominating. In the 28th minute, Madrid got a free kick outside Sevilla’s box. Brazilian youngster Rodrygo came up to the spot and channeled his inner Roberto Carlos to smash in the free kick into the bottom right corner.
The Brazilian then came up clutch in the 70th minute. He quickly breezed through the Sevilla defense and calmly slotted the ball in the bottom right corner again. The game then ended 2-1 with Madrid maintaining second position in the league. Rodrygo won the Man of the Match award thanks to his efforts and two goals.
Rodrygo has now scored three goals in the last two games. He has come up crucial in front of the goal in the absence of both Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema.
Real Madrid: Season review
Real Madrid has had a bad season compared to their standards. Los Blancos had a great season in 2022 when they won both the Champions League and La Liga. They failed to emulate the same success this season.
They lost the Spanish Super Cup final to Barcelona their eternal rivals. They lost 5 matches to them in this single season, adding to more humiliation. Barcelona eventually lifted the La Liga title with an 11 point gap with Madrid.
They were then humbled in the Champions League when they faced Manchester City in the semi-finals. The Royal Whites lost humiliatingly to the Premier League champions with a 5-1 aggregate score.
Madrid’s only success came when they won Copa Del Rey which is a trophy that they usually do not compete strongly for. They had beat Barca 4-0 in the run-up to the title.
All in all, Real Madrid have a big task ahead. With some players expected to leave, President Fiorentino Perez needs to buy some new players to strengthen the squad. Already, the Los Blancos are expecting Jude Bellingham to join the club.
Madrid will now have to finish the season on a good note when they host Athletic Bilbao on June 4.
