FC Barcelona played FC Porto away in the UEFA Champions League Matchday 2 fixture on Wednesday and accumulated all three points in the match, courtesy of Ferran Torres’ strike in the added time of the first half.
Despite the second win, Barcelona fans have been worried about their talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski, who suffered a knock in the match, failed to proceed, and was eventually replaced by Xavi to substitute Ferran Torres.
Robert Lewandowski to miss Poland’s international break due to ankle injury
Robert Lewandowski started his tenth match of the season for the La Liga side against Porto at Estádio do Dragão. Following a heavy tackle by FC Porto’s David Carmo, the Pole was forced off the field in the 34th minute of the match.
Although the striker tried to continue, he was seen struggling after the tackle and was ultimately replaced by the Spanish forward Ferran Torres, who scored the only goal of the game for the guests.
Since his arrival in Spain from Bayern Munich, Lewandowski has been a central figure in Xavi’s squad. Last season he guided the Blaugrana to the La Liga title and ended up being the League’s top scorer, winning the Pichichi award. The 35-year-old is the top scorer so far of the club with 6 goals in this season as well.
Earlier it was suggested that the injury might not be too serious, as the Barcelona boss, Xavi himself confirmed that the striker would return to the next La Liga fixture against Granada on Sunday.
However, now it is reported that it is a severe ankle injury and Robert Lewandowski is likely to miss international duty for Poland in the upcoming international breaks. In addition, his chances to feature in the El Classico are in doubt and will undergo further tests in a few days.
Robert Lewandowski unlikely to play in the next El Clásico
Following a knock, Robert Lewandowski is sidelined for over a month, missing the next La Liga and national team matches lined up ahead. He is also ruled out for Barcelona’s most important match, El Clasico, against Real Madrid at home who sit one point ahead atop the league standings.
The 35-year-old joins the star-studded list of injured players, including his teammates Raphinha, Frenkie De Jong, and Pedri, who are out due to injuries.
The first leg of the El Clasico fixture is scheduled at the end of this month, on 28th October following the international break and Champions League matchday in between. Barcelona will be hosting their archrival and the 14-time Champions League winners at their temporary home Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium.
