The top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz and the reigning women’s champion Elena Rybakina began their Wimbledon campaigns on Tuesday despite torrential rain that completely disrupted the tournament schedule at the All England Club.
Only one hour of play was possible on the outdoor courts due to the unfavourable weather, which led to the cancellation of 69 out of the scheduled 77 matches. Nevertheless, eight matches were allowed to be played on the retractable roof-equipped Centre Court and Court 1.
Alcaraz quickly and convincingly defeated Jeremy Chardy in the first set in just 22 minutes. He then maintained his momentum by breaking Chardy’s serve twice in the second set.
