Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said in a press conference, “We’re looking forward to being able to play in the United States for the first time in the club’s history. The match against Manchester United is sure to be a memorable occasion.”
He highlighted the importance of the tour for Wrexham, “The tour will be an excellent opportunity for us to prepare for the 2023-24 season, and the match against Manchester United will be a competitive fixture and a good test for us as we look ahead to the new campaign.”
“We enjoy welcoming supporters from the US to the Racecourse Ground, and we’re looking forward to being able to play in front of some of these new fans on American soil in the summer.”
Wrexham’s director of football John Murtough also spoke about the tour. He said, “This will be the first time the team has visited San Diego, and we are looking forward to playing in front of our passionate US fans.”
The match will be the first game of Manchester United’s summer tour, and the club plans to include “a youth-focused team drawn from United’s traveling tour squad supplemented by academy prospects.” Clearly, the club is going to put emphasis on the young talents in their squad and academy.
Why is Wrexham gaining popularity?
Reynolds and McElhenney completed a $2.5 million buyout of Wrexham in November 2020. They have taken the English fifth tier club to great heights.
Wrexham has also signed up to compete in the soccer competition which is a winner-take-all competition. It will feature 32 teams fighting for a $1 million prize in Cary, North Carolina from June 1-4. The Red Dragons announced their participation earlier this month.
The FX documentary ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ provided the club with worldwide publicity. Participation in The Soccer competition is regarded as an opportunity to further build on that.
