The Giants’ running back, Saquon Barkley, has been rumored to be leaving the Giants since October. But then, he mutually decided with the team to stay for the 2023 season.
However, the New York Giants have finally decided whether they want to continue with Barkley for the next season or not, and Giants fans might not like the final decision.
Saquon Barkley’s Giants future
Rumors were circulating that the Giants might not continue with Saquon Barkley for the next season because of the ongoing issues of the RB’s contract. It would mean that he would become a free agent and probably join some other team for the upcoming season.
However, the RB stated that he wants to stay with the Giants and continue playing for the New York franchise. In an interview, Barkley emphasized his respect for the team.
“I know how special the Giants organization is. I have nothing but tremendous respect for the Tisch family and the Mara family. This is the team that drafted me. I’m a big believer in setting and accomplishing goals,” the RB said.
He claimed he is adamant about achieving success with the Giants and wants to stay with the team forever.
“When I got drafted here, it was to be why the Giants was back on top and why we were having a parade in New York. It just hasn’t gone that way so far in my career. Like I said before, I want to be a Giant for life. I mentioned that I want to be in the likes of Tiki [Barber], Michael [Strahan], Eli [Manning].”
Unfortunately, despite the RB’s desire to stay with the Giants for life, the team has decided not to re-sign him for the upcoming season. ESPN reported that the team will not be getting Saquon Barkley back for the 2024 season.
The news came as a big shock and disappointment for the Giants and Barkley’s fans. Fans took to social media to take out their frustration and criticized the franchise for not re-signing the RB.
But Saquon Barkley’s tenure with the Giants has come to an end after six seasons and he is set to hit the open market as a free agent in March.
Where can Saquon Barkley potentially land?
While there are several teams where Saquon Barkley can potentially land, reportedly an unknown NFC East team and the Chargers have expressed interest in the running back.
For now, the Chargers emerge as one of the top landing spots for Barkley as the new head coach of the team Jim Harbaugh reportedly wants the RB to join the team.
Former NFL player Ryan Leaf shared that Saquon Barkley is on the top of Harbaugh’s list.
“Austin Ekeler’s a big part of what it could be with them running the football, but I do think that Saquon Barkley’s going to be at the top of [Harbaugh]’s list, in terms of, what he wants to do with the running back position with him being a free agent,” Leaf said Friday on “Good Morning Football.”
Despite the HC’s interest in the RB, the financial consideration can become a problem. The team has a very limited cap space, being over $45 million in the red. The limited cap space can make it difficult for the Chargers to sign Barkley.
The RB has good rankings and reputation in the league and is considered one of the most talented RBs. Despite injuries and missed games, he has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards multiple times and has been a significant asset to the Giants’ offense. Considering his incredible stats, he might get exceptional contract offers from other teams as well.
