The Carrington academy is well known for producing great talents for Manchester United and Mason Greenwood was one of them. The 21-year-old forward was considered a generational talent destined for greatness on the pitch. Greenwood made his debut for Manchester United at just 17 years old and quickly became a fan favorite. With his exceptional skills, he earned the confidence of the manager and secured a spot as a regular starter for the team.
However, the player got entangled in a cloud of controversies and legal proceedings for an alleged assault on his girlfriend back in 2022. Now that his name has been cleared, fans want their favorite player back at Old Trafford and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has kept the doors open for a potential return.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe talks on Mason Greenwood’s potential return
Recently, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who acquired a 25% stake in the Red Devils, finally broke the silence over Greenwood’s future. In 2022, Manchester United suspended Greenwood from the first team due to allegations of rape and domestic violence against him. However, after a year, all charges were dropped against him. Before returning straight into the starting 11, he was loaned to Getafe FC in September 2023.
As a loan player, Greenwood has started most of the games for Getafe FC. Speculation was rife that his time at Manchester United was unlikely to resume. However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent comments on Greenwood’s future have shifted the perspective of the club.
As per Mirror UK, Sir Jim Ratcliffe said, “He’s a Manchester player and we are responsible for football. It’s clear we have to make a decision. No decision has been made. He is on loan, but he is not the alone.” His remarks hinted that Greenwood may have a chance of returning to Manchester United.
Mason Greenwood’s performance this season at Getafe
Manchester United’s loaned player has arguably been the standout performer for Getafe this season. He has featured in a total of 24 matches for the club, contributing 7 goals and 5 assists across all competitions.
His debut came against Osasuna, entering as a substitute late in the second half. While his introduction was met with cheers from the Getafe fans, the Osasuna supporters did not acknowledge his arrival. Greenwood scored his first goal for Getafe against Real Betis in the league.
Greenwood has now started to regain his form and could make a comeback as one of the best young players on the field. What do you guys think—will Manchester United will go for Mason Greenwood or he will be sold?
