Ryan Spann said that his submission victory over Ion Cutelaba at UFC Vegas 54 was no surprise as Superman always beats The Hulk.
The main and co-main events at UFC Vegas 54 were both in the Light Heavyweight division, with implications at both ends of the rankings. Jan Blachowoicz took on Aleksander Rakic in the main event, while Ryan “Superman” Spann was taking on “Ion “The Hulk” Cutelaba in the co-main. Even though the co-main event itself was a juicy affair on paper, much of it was overshadowed by the hype on the main event.
That did not bother Ryan Spann though, as he had a quick night at the office by submitting Cutelaba in the very first round. From the get-go both fighters were exchanging hits, and there was an air of impatience inside the octagon.
This impatience went back to haunt the Cutelaba, as the Moldovan found himself in a precarious position after he missed some huge strikes. Spann was quick to capitalize, and he immediately put Cutelaba in a guillotine. The unranked Moldovan was very quick to tap, and Spann picked up a what looked like a very easy win.
Spann has been leading up to the fight that “Superman alwasy beats the Hulk”, and he reiterated his statement following his victory.
“First of all, Superman always beats the Hulk. Always.”, the 13th ranked contender said, ” Secondly, I have the best coach in the world. I did what I came here to do.”
Spann was coming off a loss against veteran Anthony Smith, but following this victory, he will have put the contenders around him on notice.
