With tennis being an individual sport, the spotlight often falls wholly on the player. And that is a moment to showcase one’s talent and style in front of thousands of ardent fans. Iconic hairstyles have become ubiquitous, from Andre Agassi’s mane to Rafael Nadal’s hirsute head.
Roger Federer is among tennis’s stylish icons and his grace and elegance on the court were adeptly matched by his signature hairstyle and collared T-shirts. The Swiss maestro once had a hilarious exchange on the court with a fellow legend regarding his hairdo.
Agassi and Federer’s comic exchange during exhibition game
Andre Agassi is no amateur when it comes to displaying a unique style on the court. His flowy mane that had women wooing over him and flying vigorously with the wind during matches was a signature look for the American, one that is as famous as his bald look afterward.
It was thus based on experience that the 8-time grand slam champion quipped a hilarious quote on Roger Federer’s coiffure during an exhibition game.
In the particular match, Agassi jokingly addresses Federer’s constant pushback of his hair by stating that the Swiss wouldn’t need to wear a headband if he just “got a haircut”. He goes on to mimic his opponent’s actions and calls him a “cutie”.
Federer was in splits and responded by mimicking combing his hair in an attempt to show the vast difference in the length of the tresses between the pair of players.
Roger Federer has undergone a series of changes in looks over the years, especially when it comes to his haircut. What hasn’t changed, though, are his collared T-shirts, most often black or white, and his shorts. In terms of his haircut, the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s look has changed over the years and stands as a testament to his growing legacy and achievements on the tennis court.
The evolution of Roger Federer’s hair
Federer’s first tryst with a photo finish to a tournament occurred during the 1998 Wimbledon boys’ event. He can be seen lifting the trophy in elation while sporting a short-to-medium haircut that is split in between.
In the 2000 Davis Cup, Federer had grown his hair long and knotted it into a single ponytail, and it stood out like a palm tree on a barren island when he played. A few months later, during the US Open, Federer swapped his ponytail for a headband and a slick-back hairdo that stood the test of the winds in the stadium.
In 2003–04, Federer would grow his hair even longer. However, as the years passed, Federer began trimming his hair and it grew in the opposite direction from the 2005 season onwards.
Roger Federer would sport his trademark medium-length haircut with a headband in the years to follow, one that has the ‘FedEx’ style written all over it. He would trim his hair during the 2018–19 season, but it would eventually return to its flowy length until his retirement.
Now, the Swiss icon is 42 years old and a father of four children. He has cut his hair short again but many fans will yearn to see the medium-length drooping haircut that he has sported for many years.
