If the GOAT of tennis was decided in a popularity contest, Roger Federer would sweep the competition with ease. The Swiss legend is a fan favorite, known exclusively for being one of the most graceful and easy-on-the-eye tennis players in the history of the sport.
From going on cruises with fans to taking selfies at every opportune moment with his supporters, Roger has returned the favour with eagerness. Now, his father revealed that the 42-year-old was still a cherished personality in his fans’ minds.
Robert Federer shares surprising revelation
Roger Federer retired in 2022 after spending two decades on the tennis court. After he retired, Federer still makes appearances at tennis events and is busy with his business and personal life. However, his supporters still play a major role in his life and the reason could be their fervent admiration of him, as revealed by his father, Robert Federer.
In an interview with Schweizer Illustrierte, Robert said that his son still received “a pile of fan mail” even after his retirement.
“I still manage a huge pile of fan mail. One would think that this would decrease after retirement. But that’s not the case,” Robert Federer said.
Roger Federer has been spending close time with his family, who consist of his mother Lynette, father Robert, wife Mirka and four children. The “The Icon Athlete of the 2023 Shanghai Masters” winner still has a manager to deal with his fans’ outrageous support for him.
Robert, while always a fan of his son’s tennis game, has meanwhile seemingly moved on to a younger superstar whom he admires as his favourite player.
Federer’s dad picks a new star after son’s retirement
Robert Federer recently revealed that upcoming American tennis player Ben Shelton was his new favourite player after his son had retired. The Swiss was in awe of the 20-year-old’s game and viewed his game as “beautiful”.
“Wow, it’s just beautiful to look at him. I’m a big fan of his. It’s my new favourite. I am always also interested in how the parents behave,” Robert said.
Ben Shelton, meanwhile, revealed that his inspiration was gained from the Big 3 of tennis and called Roger Federer his favourite player.
In an interview with La Gazzeta dello Sport, Ben talked about each player’s strengths but singled out the Swiss as his preferred choice.
“I studied [Rafael] Nadal and tried to steal some secrets from him. But my favourite has always been Roger. Novak Djokovic? In three years he will still be a top five, he will still win tournaments,” Ben Shelton said.
Roger Federer is busy chauffeuring his kids from school and appearing in major events around the globe and also revealed his preference to return to tennis as Team Europe’s captain in the Laver Cup.
