The Light-heavyweight division has not had a stable champ for a long time now. Fans expected UFC 282 to change the deadlock and bring in a proper champion. Such hopes were shattered after the main event ended in a draw. Now Jamahal Hill is going to get a shot at the title against a former champion.
During the Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones days, Light-heavyweight was the UFCs crown jewel division. After Jones retired a sudden domino effect was seen in the division. Dominic Reyes was coming off as the favorite in the next title fight but lost to veteran Jan ‘Polish Power’ Blachowicz.
Jan then defended the tile once against then-middleweight champ Israel Adesanya only to lose it against 42-year-old fighter Glover Texeira. Glover in his next fight went against Jiri Prochazka in Singapore.
Jiri and Glover were supposed to fight again in UFC 282 but Prochazka suffered a last-minute shoulder injury. That fight was canceled and the title was vacated again. Now the co-main event between Magomed Ankalaev and Jan Blachowicz was promoted to the main event.
The main event ended in an uneventful draw and the UFC immediately booked another title fight between Glover and Jamahal Hill for the UFC 283 card. Teixeira was still in the arena and Jamahal received a call seemingly when “They were still in the cage.”
In Jamahal’s own words, “One hundred percent, it was an immediate yes.” For his opponent he had this to say, “I see it like everybody else does: He has the same mindset as all ya’ll”
Hill isn’t afraid of Glover’s ground game either as he believes he has the ability to win anywhere. ‘Sweet Dreams’ is ready for a knockout, a brawl, on the ground, or on the clinch.
UFC 283 will take place in Brazil.
