Three-Time All-Star Sparks Debate With Sensitive NBA Draft Proposal

Three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas has deservedly earned a reputation for controversy. People frequently strike out at him because he speaks on sensitive topics. Recently, his comments and bold suggestions for proposing a radical change to the NBA draft system caused yet another heated discussion.

Arenas suggests that the league should allow players to choose their own teams rather than being drafted by specific franchises. While suggesting draft system adjustments, he made it apparent that he still had mixed feelings about being a second-round selection in 2001.

As Sports Illustrated transcribed, the 42-year-old said, “They should test the theory out. You have the draft so we know who’s picking. Whoever is considered mock draft at number one, number two, you ask ask him what team he wants.”

He further added, “Let’s say you want to go to the Lakers and play with LeBron and you’re supposed to be the number one pick and that pick is 17th and that’s 17th money. Are you going to take that 17th money?”

The NBA has evolved with various changes to boost its global appeal, but it seems even these adjustments can’t satisfy the man who owns all 5 of the late Kobe Bryant’s championship rings.
